THE PREDICTION

This will be a hugely interesting clash between world number four Jessica Pegula and number six Maria Sakkari, the last two victors of the Guadalajara Masters after Sakkari usurped the American as champion last weekend. Pegula beat Sakkari to the Guadalajara title in straight sets late last season but the pair have shared another two meetings this season in three tight sets, both semi-finals in Qatar and Washington. Sakkari’s victory in Washington last month, and the resplendent confidence she has shown on court this week with another consummate victory over Caroline Garcia, suggests the Greek is the slight favourite here but her 5-3 lead in their head-to-head is slim in real terms. Second seed Pegula conceded just one game to Daria Kasatkina on Friday but she may never have played this version of Sakkari, free-wheeling off the back of a huge emotional release last week in Mexico. Back the Greek to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
