THE LOWDOWN

World number five Maria Sakkari avenged her defeat to Jessica Pegula in the final of the Guadalajara Masters last time out with a straight-sets victory over the American in her WTA Finals opener. The 27-year-old has come in for plenty of criticism this season as she continues to falter at key moments in both tournaments and within matches themselves but form looks to have found her just in time late this season. Sakkari has still won just one WTA title but the Greek has finished runner-up at two Masters events this season and she reached the semi-finals of both Roland-Garros and the US Open last season.

World number seven Aryna Sabalenka came back from a set down to provide an early mini upset at the WTA Finals in beating world number two Ons Jabeur. The 24-year-old has endured an, ultimately, poor season on tour but that makes her qualification for the Finals all the more impressive and her recent run to the semi-finals of the US Open, for a second-successive season, is proof of what she can do when in her all-powerful rhythm.

THE PREDICTION

Maria Sakkari beat Aryna Sabalenka in three tight sets this time last season at the WTA Finals in Guadalajara but Sabalenka leads their head-to-head record 4-2, with each of their six matches coming on hardcourts. This looks a likely three-set thriller on Thursday between two players who can fluctuate wildly from game to game, let alone set to set. With Sakkari finally in some strong form picking a winner looks difficult but Sabalenka has earned at least a set in each of their six meetings to offer up a suitably cautious move here.
