THE LOWDOWN

MARCOS GIRON

World number 60 Marcos Giron pulled off one of the best results of his career by taking out former Rome finalist Diego Schwartzman in straight sets on Wednesday. The 28-year-old has also beaten the likes of Taylor Fritz and Pablo Carreno Busta this season in keeping with some excellent form he found late last year. Giron has never made it past the round if 16 at Masters level.

FELIX AUGER-ALIASSIME

World number nine Felix Auger-Aliassime made a statement of intent in Rome by coming back from a set down to beat Monte-Carlo finalist Alejandro Davidovich Fokina on Tuesday. The eighth seed lost to Alexander Zverev in straight sets in the quarter-finals of last week’s Madrid Open and he has reached the last eight in each of his last three tournaments. 21-year-old Auger-Aliassime won his first ATP title at the ninth time of asking at the Rotterdam Open back in February.

THE PREDICTION

Marcos Giron is a tireless competitor who is well capable of shocking top players on his day but taking out Diego Schwartzman in straight sets still came as a surprise in these conditions. The American has reached this stage of a Masters tournament twice before, in fact back-to-back at the last two Paris Masters, and he will back himself to the hilt here against Felix Auger-Aliassime who can still occasionally not show up in matches like these. The Canadian is the clear favourite nonetheless but things could come closer than their previous meeting at last season’s Halle Open, where Auger-Aliassime beat Giron in straight sets on a grass surface that better suits him. Back FAA to win outright here with three sets quite possible.
