THE PREDICTION
World number 43 Lorenzo Sonego received a bye to the round of 16 at the Umag Open as the second this week but he could have done with a kinder first round opener as he aims to snap a four-match losing streak. The 28-year-old had found some excellent form on his favoured clay less than two months ago, with a run to the round of 16 at Roland-Garros seeing three excellent wins including a five-set comeback over Andrey Rublev, but he endured a tough time on the grass. World number 96 Marco Cecchinato remains a name to avoid in any draw on his favoured clay but the elder Italian is far from the man who reached the semi-finals in Paris back in 2018. The 30-year-old came back from a set down to beat Alexander Shevchenko on Tuesday, including a vastly impressive 7-0 tiebreaker in the second, but this first meeting with his compatriot will be considerably tougher. Sonego should be coming through this match in straight sets at his best but right now the suitably cautious call is backing the second seed to earn at least a set.
