THE PREDICTION
World number 17 Hubert Hurkacz is a player of real top 10 quality but the Pole’s once rock-solid mentality has taken a hammering over the past 12 months. The 26-year-old won his first five ATP finals without reply until defeat to Pablo Carreno Busta in Montreal last August and he has looked much shakier in key moments practically ever since. Two three-set defeats to Carlos Alcaraz this month, including in the semi-finals of Cincinnati two weeks ago, are proof of what he is capable in these conditions but he desperately needs a kind draw for a potentially transformative deep run this fortnight. 27-year-old Marc-Andrea Huesler came into sudden form this time last season to win his maiden ATP title at the Sofia Open but he has endured a tough sophomore season on tour to bring a poor 11-21 record into the first round. Hurkacz should have enough to come through this first encounter in straight sets but too many of his matches have needed deciders this season. Back the Pole to win outright.
