THE PREDICTION

World number 92 Magdalena Frech has been battling valiantly on grass this month and her efforts were rewarded on Tuesday with a straight-sets upset over the 21st seed Camila Giorgi. 24-year-old Frech beat Qinwen Zheng in Eastbourne last week and took Nottingham and Birmingham champion Beatriz Haddad-Maia to a deciding tiebreak the week before for a working level high enough to look a clear favourite in this second round clash with Anna-Karolina Schmiedlova. World number 84 Schmiedlova needed three sets to beat an out-of-form Rebecca Peterson on Tuesday but it was the Slovak’s first ever win at Wimbledon at the seventh time of asking and that should give her a boost here. Frech has been in some arduous matches lately and backing her to win this outright, probably in three, seems reasonable.
