THE PREDICTION

World number two Aryna Sabalenka is the defending champion here in Madrid but there is extra pressure this fortnight with Coco Gauff currently moving up to second in the live WTA rankings. 25-year-old Sabalenka, who also won here in 2021, successfully defended her Australian Open title in January but a considerable blip in form since, even before the tragic loss of her former partner in March, makes this campaign a fascinating one in conditions that suit her better than most.

World number 48 Magda Linette finished runner-up to Sloane Stephens at the Rouen Open last week and she bounced back well on Wednesday, coming back from a set down to beat Elisabetta Cocciaretto. The Pole would dearly love to claim a first win against Sabalenka, who ended her dream run to the semi-finals in Melbourne last year, but a 3-0 lead for the Belarussian without dropping a set doe skt bode well. Take Sabalenka to win in two.

TIP: ARYNA SABALENKA TO WIN 2-0
