THE LOWDOWN

MADISON KEYS

Former world number seven Madison Keys is yet to drop a set after an assured win over Jaqueline Cristian, backing up an excellent performance against former champion Sofia Kenin. The 26-year-old finished runner-up to Sloane Stephens at the US Open in 2017 and after a difficult few seasons she looks ton be regaining her love for the sport this year. Keys won her sixth career WTA title last week at Adelaide 2 via strong wins over Elina Svitolina and Coco Gauff.

QIANG WANG

30-year-old Qiang Wang fought back valiantly to beat Alison Van Uytvanck in three sets on Wednesday, backing up a huge shock win over Coco Gauff in the first round. The world number 110 has spent much of the last few seasons off the tour but a quarter-final in 2019 at the US Open, in which she reached four-straight finals on the Asian swing of the tour, is recent evidence of what she is capable. She set a career-high WTA world ranking of 12th that year, winning two of the four finals she reached at the Nanchang Open and Guangzhou Open.

THE PREDICTION

Madison Keys is a proper dark horse for a deep run here in Melbourne, if not the title in her current form, but Qiang Wang has already surprised us twice. The Chinese’s victory over an out-of-sorts Coco Gauff was unexpected enough but her fight back against Van Uytvanck proved it not to be a fluke and she will take even more confidence into this fourth career meeting with the former US Open finalist. Keys leads their head-to-head record 2-1 with two wins on tour in 2018 but Qiang Wang was the winner of their most recent meeting at the WTA Finals later that same year. The last two women to beat Coco Gauff face off here but Keys brings a seven-match winning streak into the equation. Take the American to battle through with an outright win here all the same but it would not be a huge surprise to see another upset.
