THE PREDICTION

This could be one of the matches of the day if world number 16 Elena Rybakina and number 22 Madison Keys bring their best to this first meeting on tour. Former world number seven Keys overcame Caroline Garcia in straight sets on Thursday, backing up a decent three-set win over Anna Kalinskaya in the first round for only her second and third wins on clay this season. The 27-year-old finished runner-up at the US Open in 2017 and after a few years in the wilderness she looked on her way back to her best at the Australian Open, where she lost in the semi-finals to eventual champion Ash Barty. Keys is a complete all-courter, though, with a run to the last four here back in 2018 and all surfaces amongst her six WTA titles, including this season’s Adelaide 2.

22-year-old Rybakina has great pedigree at Roland-Garros already after reaching the quarter-finals here last season, stunning Serena Williams in the round of 16. The powerful Kazakh also struggle din the first round through three sets before a more assured display against Katie Volynets and this looks a really tough call between two players very capable of deep runs off the back of this. Rybakina has the better results on clay in recent weeks and her run last season perhaps makes her the slightest of favourites. Back the 16th seed to win at least a set here and leave the winner up to chance.
