THE PREDICTION

World number 12 Jannik Sinner came back from a set down to beat Roberto Carballes Baena in four on Thursday. The 20-year-old set his best Grand Slam record here back in 2020 with a run to the quarter-finals as a rising star and he emulated that feat at the Australian Open back in January before losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas. The Italian has needed top 10 quality to oust him form his three clay-court tournaments this season: Alexander Zverev in Monte-Carlo, Felix Auger-Aliassime in Madrid and Tsitsipas in Rome.

World number 60 Mackenzie McDonald will have a score to settle here after Sinner beat him in his first and only tour final at last seasons’ Washington Open. The 27-year-old thumped Nikoloz Basilashvili in straight sets on Thursday to reach the third round of Roland-Garros for the first time. The American reached the round of 16 at the Australian Open last season before meeting top opposition in Daniil Medvedev and Sinner is not far from that upper echelon. Back the Italian to win outright here with straight sets likely but four possible.
