THE PREDICTION

World number four Carlos Alcaraz first really blossomed on tour this time last season with a huge run to the quarter-finals of the US Open, stunning Stefanos Tsitsipas in five sets before injury saw him retire against Felix Auger-Aliassime. One year on, the teenager became the youngest player to reach word number five since Rafael Nadal in 2005 and he has so far won four ATP titles this season, including two Masters crowns from Miami and Madrid. More recently Alcaraz has found himself outplayed by Jannik Sinner at Wimbledon and the Umag Open, where he was defending his maiden ATP title, Lorenzo Musetti in Hamburg and Tommy Paul last week in Montreal to suggest there is a slight mini-crisis in confidence but this opening match against Mackenzie McDonald should prove a settler for that, at least for the moment. World number 72 McDonald is at his best in these conditions, though, and he will be boosted by Tommy Paul’s heroics in Montreal as well as his blistering 6-0, 6-1 victory over Nikoloz Basilashvili on Sunday.

This is not as clear cut as it should be, and a small one-off on the American to cause a huge upset could be worth a go here, but Alcaraz won their first meeting in straight sets at Indian Wells this year and he should be able to repeat the feat here.
