THE PREDICTION
The Italian Open draw is wide enough on the ATP side to see a deep run come from somewhere unexpected and that could well be 22-year-old Luciano Darderi, who brings a career-high world ranking of 54th into his native tournament. The Italian will be backed to the hilt as one of the latest up-and-comers from the reigning Davis Cup champions and he proved himself a big-game player in February when collecting his maiden ATP title in only his third ever tournament in Cordoba.
Former world number 10 Denis Shapovalov has enjoyed plenty of strong runs in Rome in his career so far but the Canadian brings a hugely deflated ranking of 126th into 2024’s edition after two seasons of poor form and injury absences. The 25-year-old beat Darderi in three tight sets at the Miami Open in March, before stunning 10th seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, but it is difficult to back him with any real confidence despite two impressive wins over clay-courters Facundo Diaz Acosta and Tomas Martin Etcheverry in Madrid two weeks ago. Shapovalov has never lost at this stage of Rome, losing to players ranked inside the top 15 in each of his five appearances here, to suggest he can find a way through this likely thriller. Leave this match out of an accumulator but otherwise consider taking it to need a decider before a winner is found.
