THE PREDICTION

This first meeting between world number 63 Lorenzo Sonego and number 102 Jordan Thompson looks a good candidate for a five-setter in New York. 27-year-old Sonego takes a poor 18-23 record into the US Open from what has been a season plagued by a crisis in confidence more than anything as the Italian is still displaying top 30 tennis in many of his odd defeats. A three-set loss to Maxime Dressy at Winston-Salem last week is a reasonable sign of some ruggedness returning and he has reached the third round at all three Grand Slams so far this season to suggest he can squeeze through here but Thompson will know when to pounce. The 28-year-old has dipped back into the Challenger circuit on a few occasions this season, with back-to-back finals reached over the summer, but he too is enduring a poor season overall. Thompson played two five-setters here last season and started this year off with another at the Australian Open, whilst Sonego played one each at Roland-Garros and Wimbledon. Leave this match out of an accumulator but consider taking a punt on the pair to go the distance.
