THE PREDICTION
World number 175 Gilles Simon rolled back the years to beat David Goffin in straight sets on Tuesday in front of an adoring home crowd in Metz. The 37-year-old veteran stunned Pablo Carreno Busta in five sets at Roland-Garros this June in what is highly likely to be his last season as a professional tennis player and it would not be a surprise to see him excel at other French tournaments after a run to the third round in Paris. World number 65 Lorenzo Sonego is a reasonably good draw for the Frenchman at this moment in time as the Italian continues to endure by far the worst season of his career. The former world number 21 is far better than his current performances suggest but he has failed to win back-to-back matches on tour since reaching the third round of Wimbledon back in July. A straight-sets victory over fellow struggler Aslan Karatsev was a welcome one on Monday but backing Simon to snatch at least a set in a partisan atmosphere seems a reasonable call here.
