THE PREDICTION
27-year-old Lorenzo Sonego lost to defending Eastbourne International champion Alex de Minaur on Wednesday in a repeat of last season’s final. The Italian reached the second week at Wimbledon last season, matching his previous best showing at a major from Roland-Garros back in 2020, before a straight-sets defeat to Roger Federer. However, the draw has not been kind to Sonego as he faces world number 78 Denis Kudla for a third time this season. 29-year-old Kudla has won both of their matches this season, including at Queen’s two weeks ago, and he was the only player to take a set from eventual champion Matteo Berrettini that week. The American is better than his world ranking, especially on grass, but always something of an enigma on tour. Backing him to win at least two sets against a still fairly choppy Lorenzo Sonego seems a suitable compromise here in leaving a winner up to chance.
