THE PREDICTION
World number 29 Lorenzo Musetti has been in terrible form practically ever since the start of the late hardcourt swing last summer, with a three-match losing streak on tour-level clay coming into Rome very concerning indeed. The 22-year-old finished runner-up to Mariano Navone at the Cagliari Challenger last week to at least bring some momentum into the Italian Open and he will be desperate to hit the ground running with a raucous partisan backing in Rome, whose fans are desperate for a home hopeful to get behind in Jannik Sinner and Matteo Berrettini’s absence.
World number 137 Terence Atmane grabbed an excellent straight-sets victory over Christopher Eubanks on his Rome debut, backing-up an eye-catching qualifying run, but despite Musetti’s poor recent results he is likely to be able to turn it on in this first encounter. Musetti, at his elusive best, should be blasting through in straight sets as one of the most naturally gifted clay players around but take the Italian to win outright here for caution’s sake.
TIP: LORENZO MUSETTI TO WIN
