THE LOWDOWN

LORENZO MUSETTI

20-year-old Lorenzo Musetti will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of at least 51st after beating in-form Sebastian Korda in straight sets on Wednesday. The Italian has been touted for a big future for some time after bursting onto the scene at the 2020 Italian Open but his 2021 season turned on its head after losing to Novak Djokovic in the round of 16 at Roland-Garros last summer from two sets up.

ALEXANDER ZVEREV

World number three Alexander Zverev was a break up in the first set but lost it against Marin Cilic on Wednesday before coming back to beat the Croat in three. The 24-year-old is clearly not yet comfortable with his game on the clay after a capitulation at the Munich Open last week but he is the defending champion from last season and a two-time Madrid Open champion overall after winning his first title here in 2018. Zverev enjoyed his best season on tour last year with a Gold Medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games and a second WTA Finals title taking his total career titles up to 19.

THE PREDICTION

This could end up the upset of the round if Lorenzo Musetti can replicate the level he beat Sebastian Korda with on Wednesday. The Italian has a high ceiling, especially on clay, but has needed a run like this at a prestigious event to boost his confidence after losing most of it at last season’s Roland-Garros. Defending champion Alexander Zverev needs to improve several areas of his game on clay sharpish if he is to challenge in Paris later this month but this first meeting with Musetti, who will be up for it in a huge way, looks more than just a banana skin. Backing Musetti to win at least a set could be the shrewd move here, although the sensible pick for an accumulator remains taking the German to win at least one to leave the winner up to chance.
