THE PREDICTION

World number 30 Liudmila Samsonova beat Elena Rybakina in straight sets on Wednesday in a seriously high-quality first round clash. The 23-year-old looks to have maintained her excellent form from last month, where she won the second and third WTA titles of her career back-to-back in Washington and Cleveland before exiting the US Open in the round of 16. Having survived an early test, Samsonova should have more than enough to take out world number 78 Xinyu Wang on Thursday. The 20-year-old Chinese prospect looks one of many up-and-coming talents from her country but this season has been less impressive than her breakthrough last year. A three-set victory over Ellen Perez was a solid start to her Tokyo campaign but Samsonova should be considered a creditable title contender here and she can be backed to win in two.
