THE PREDICTION
23-year-old Liudmila Samsonova set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 26th this week after a stunning run to the semi-finals of the Stuttgart Open. The Russian became the first player to take a set off of world number one Iga Swiatek since Indian Wells in a seriously impressive three-set defeat that suggests she could be a dark horse for another deep run at the Madrid Open. She will have to overcome a huge deficit here, though, as she trails world number 58 Petra Martic 0-4 in their head-to-head record. 31-year-old Martic is at her best on the clay as her only WTA title to date at the Istanbul Open in 2019 can attest, and she reached the semi-finals of the Italian Open last season before losing to Karolina Pliskova. The Croat qualified well to make the main draw in Madrid but she has struggled for consistent performances for some time now and that makes taking Samsonova to win outright tempting. The sensible move remains taking Samsonova to win at least a set, though, given her record against Martic with two losses on clay and two on hardcourts, most recently in the round of 16 at Indian Wells last month.
