THE PREDICTION

World number 23 Liudmila Samsonova has been one of the form players in the second-half of 2022, winning three WTA titles from the Citi Open, Cleveland Championships and most recently the Japan Open. The 23-year-old lost her first match back since Tokyo in three tight sets to Bianca Andreescu at the San Diego Open last week to suggest she is still in serious form but Kaia Kanepi is a tough opening draw and the Estonian will be seeking revenge. World number 33 Kanepi finished runner-up to Samsonova at the Citi Open back in August to trail 0-2 in their head-to-head record but the 37-year-old took the first set that day after a strong campaign. A more recent run to the semi-finals of the Tallinn Open included victories over Jelena Ostapenko and Karolina Muchova but Samsonova is likely still a level just above at this moment in time. Back Samsonova to win outright here.
