THE PREDICTION
World number two Iga Swiatek broke Coco Gauff’s 16-match winning streak in straight set son Saturday for a huge statement coming into the China Open final. The 22-year-old has, rather surprisingly, yet to win a Masters tournament this season but she can count a fourth Grand Slam title claimed at Roland-Garros amongst her four WTA trophies picked up in 2023 and five of her career total of 15 titles are Masters events. World number 22 Liudmila Samsonova is through to her second Masters final this season and she has done so once again by upsetting Elena Rybakina in the semi-finals, impressively ousting the Kazakh to extend a now 4-0 lead in their head-to-head. The 24-year-old is at her very best in these conditions but she will have to go against the grain in this final as Swiatek leads their head-to-head 2-0.
Their first match fell the Pole’s way in tight three sets in Stuttgart last season to contrast with a 6-1 6-0 hammering at the Dubai Masters back in February but this third encounter should come closer to the former. Swiatek has lost both of her Masters finals this season, to Barbora Krejickova in Dubai and to Aryna Sabalenka in Madrid, but back the Pole to edge to victory here.
