THE PREDICTION

World number four Aryna Sabalenka received a bye to the second round of the Guadalajara Masters as the second seed in the draw, with a recent run to the semi-finals of the US Open proof that the Belarussian is well on her way back to her best. A three-set defeat to Donna Vekic at the San Diego Open last week looks less of a shock with hindsight, as the Croat finished runner-up to Iga Swiatek in three sets on Sunday, and Sabalenka also took a set from the world number one at the US Open before crashing out at the penultimate stage for a second season running. This is a really tough opener all the same, though, as she takes on in-form Liudmila Samsonova for the first time. The 23-year-old comes into Guadalajara at a career-high WTA world ranking of 22nd with three recent titles under her belt from the Citi Open, Cleveland Championships and Japan Open and she looked in business in a straight-sets victory over Kaia Kanepi on Monday.

Three sets seem likelier than two in this potential thriller but at this moment in time the Russian seems the more dependable performer. Back Samsonova to win at least a set here and leave the victor up to chance.
