THE LOWDOWN

LIUDMILA SAMSONOVA

23-year-old Liudmila Samsonova set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 32nd last month despite struggling with consistency so far this season. She won her first WTA tour title last summer at the Berlin Open on grass and a run to the round of 16 at Wimbledon suggests she could do some more damage this summer on the rarest surface.

ANN LI

World number 64 Ann Li came back from a set down to beat fellow American Madison Brengle on Wednesday, reaching the second round of Indian Wells for a first time. The 21-year-old won her first tour title at the Tenerife Ladies Open last season but she also shared the Grampians Trophy with Anett Kontaveit at the start of the year as the final was cancelled due to clashing with the Australian Open.

THE PREDICTION

This is a tough match to call at this moment in time in a first meeting between Ann Li and Liudmila Samsonova. The Russian has not won a match since early January but she came close in a three-set defeat to in-form Alize Cornet at the Qatar Open last month, whilst Ann Li’s shaky start at Indian Wells should see her more battle-ready here. With three sets pretty likely, back the American to win at least one of them with the support of a partisan crowd behind her.
