THE PREDICTION

21-year-old Xinyu Wang came into the Japan Women’s Open at a career-high WTA world ranking of 39th and she is playing like a woman on the rise this week, overcoming a tough foe in Yulia Putintseva in three tight sets on Thursday. The Chinese has been steadily improving on tour this season after initially bursting through and then struggling last year but a run to the round of 16 at the US Open earlier this month is proof of what she can achieve in these conditions with plenty to come in her career. 29-year-old Lin Zhu is the top seed in Osaka at world number 35 and she has rarely been troubled so far, dropping just the one set to Moyuka Uchijima in the round of 16. The elder Chinese enjoyed her own career-best run to the round of 16 of the Australian Open back in January and she took that form into the Hua Hin Championships for a maiden WTA title – something Wang looks capable of emulating here. Lin Zhu has won both of their previous encounters, including at Hua Hin, but back Wang to get her first win on the board as the player with the greater momentum behind her.
