THE PREDICTION
This could be the match of the day between two of the more entertaining players on tour, although both come to Madrid desperately seeking form. World number nine Ons Jabeur won her most prestigious of five WTA titles here in Madrid two years ago but she is currently far from the player who finished up in two Grand Slam finals later that summer. The Tunisian needed three sets to beat Anna-Karolina Schmiedlova on Thursday, at least building on her solid campaign in Stuttgart last week, but world number 35 Leylah Fernandez will pose a much tougher test based on her excellent opener over Anastasia Potapova. 21-year-old Fernandez dragged Canada all the way to a maiden Billie Jean King Cup title late last season but she has struggled to find her best tennis for herself for some time. Jabeur leads their head-to-head 2-0 but both matches went to three sets and similar fare seems likely here. Back Fernandez to earn at least one of them as the likelier of the two to edge through this time.
