THE PREDICTION

Former world number 13 Leylah Fernandez is through to her first WTA tour final since winning the 2022 Monterrey Open last spring, defending her maiden title won there the year before. The 21-year-old has spent much of the past two seasons trying to get back to her previous, battling best that saw her reach the final of the US Open in 2021 and just miss out to Emma Raducanu in one of the defining moments tennis this century. One dropped set this week, to rising star Mirra Andreeva, says the Canadian is finally improving again and she looks the favourite against Katerina Siniakova, who should be treated with caution as a wily opponent at this level. The 27-year-old won her fourth WTA title at the Bad Homburg Open in June, although Iga Swiatek’s withdrawal certainly helped, and wins over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Martina Trevisan here in Hong Kong should see her very competitive. Fernandez beat the Czech in straight sets on clay at Roland-Garros last summer and she can be backed to edge this encounter to lift her third title.
