25-year-old Frances Tiafoe comes into the US Open at a career-high ATP world ranking of 10th built mostly on his remarkable run to the semi-finals here last summer, where he took eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz to five sets before defeat. The American has won two more ATP titles this season to his career total of three, one on each surface after wins on clay in Houston and on grass at Stuttgart back in June. Tiafoe has struggled to impose himself on tour since Stuttgart, particularly since transitioning to hardcourts with a 3-3 record very underwhelming coming into New York. 17-year-old Learner Tien received a wildcard to the main draw at the US Open for a second season running and he took a set from Miomir Kecmanovic this time last year to suggest this could be an early scare for Tiafoe. Facing a fellow American is likely to count against Tien, though, with the support likely to pull towards Tiafoe after an opening set of supporting the underdog. Tiafoe should be winning this in straight sets but there is enough recent trepidation to make an outright pick the right call for an accumulator.
