THE PREDICTION
34-year-old Laura Siegemund will always be a handful on her favoured clay but the German is enjoying one of her best spells on tour for some time after winning the Miami Open Women’s Doubles earlier this month alongside fellow veteran Vera Zvonareva. The former world number 27 is currently ranked at 231st but back-to-back wins over Tamara Zidansek and Maria Sakkari, the latter via a second-set retirement, makes a third-straight upset here over Liudmila Samsonova look likely. 23-year-old Samsonova is a solid all-courter coming off an excellent straight-sets victory over Karolina Pliskova on Thursday and she handed a rare double bagel to French qualifier Chloe Paquet in the first round. The Russian remains the favourite on overall ability in this first meeting but the Stuttgart crowd will create a partisan atmosphere that makes backing Siegemund to win at least a set the shrewd move here.
