THE PREDICTION

World number 57 Laslo Djere beat Tomas Martin Etcheverry in straight sets on Monday to get a strong foothold in at the Hamburg Open. The 28-year-old is a tough competitor on his favoured clay but a three-set defeat to Zizou Bergs at the Bastad Open last week was poor by his standards, particularly after impressing in a run to the third round at Wimbledon earlier this month. Former world number 20 Guido Pella overcame Thiago Monteiro in three sets on Monday in his first match back on tour since a very encouraging run of his own to the third round at SW19. The Argentine reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon back in 2019 and it will have meant the world to him on his return from a huge injury lay-off to have upset 13th seed Borna Coric in the first round there at the start of this month. Pella won back-to-back matches for the first time since his recovery at Wimbledon and he should be considered a healthy part of this intriguing clash on Wednesday. Pella beat Djere twice on clay at his peak in 2019 to lead their head-to-head 2-0 but both matches came very close indeed. Take at least one tiebreak here, with three of their five sets played going the distance, in a suitable way to leave the result up to chance.
