THE PREDICTION

Former world number one Karolina Pliskova looks set to become one of the best players never to win a Grand Slam on the WTA tour, twice finishing runner-up here in 2016 and at Wimbledon in 2021. The 31-year-old has reached at least the quarter-finals here in five of her last seven appearances, including each of the last two, but she has struggled for form practically ever since making the last eight in Melbourne back in January. It does not take much for the Czech to bounce back at the highest level but this match is certainly worth leaving out of an accumulator until we can gauge what level she is capable of in New York. World number 167 Elena-Gabriela Ruse came close to breaking the top 50 last summer but suffered an injury that hampered the rest of 2022 and much of this season. The 25-year-old qualified well last week to make her third appearance at the US Open but this looks too steep of a test despite Pliskova’s recent poor form. Take the Czech to win outright or leave this one alone altogether.
