THE LOWDOWN

KAROLINA MUCHOVA

Former world number 19 Karolina Muchova is yet to drop a set, incredibly, in her first tournament back from injury since last season’s US Open. The 25-year-old beat Leylah Fernandez in impressive fashion on Thursday to back-up a solid result against Tereza Martincova and she is already well on her way back up the rankings. Muchova reached two WTA tour finals in 2019, winning one of them at the Seoul Open.

NAOMI OSAKA

Former world number one Naomi Osaka looked impressive in a straight-sets victory over Angelique Kerber, especially as the German had led their head-to-head record 4-1. The 24-year-old is a four-time Grand Slam champion but after spending much of last season away from the tour she is without at least one current major title since winning the 2018 US Open. Osaka may not reach 20 WTA titles but she is a big-time champion, with two Masters events amongst her current career total of seven titles from Indian Wells in 2018 and the Beijing Open a year later.

THE PREDICTION

This match could really go any which way between two top players on respective returns from injury and breaks from the tour. Karolina Muchova has been mightily impressive in her intensity so far at the Miami Open in what is her first tournament since late September last year but Osaka has more matches in her legs this season and a straight-sets victory over Angelique Kerber is a statement piece. The pair share a 1-1 head-to-head record with both matches seeing three sets, Osaka winning at the Western & Southern Masters in 2020 and Muchova at last season’s Madrid Open. Three sets seems likely again here and that could tip the match into a physicality that the returning Muchova could struggle with. The sensible option is for Osaka to win at least a set but she looks the player most likely to win outright here.
