THE LOWDOWN
KAREN KHACHANOV
World number 24 Karen Khachanov overcame Pablo Carreno Busta in three sets on Wednesday to win back-to-back matches at a tournament for the first time since the Qatar Open in February, where he lost in three to eventual champion Roberto Bautista Agut. The 25-year-old won the 2018 Paris Masters title to set a career-high ATP world ranking of eighth but he has struggled to reach those heights since.
STEFANOS TSITSIPAS
World number five Stefanos Tsitsipas saved match points against Grigor Dimitrov on Wednesday in a see-saw match settled by a deciding tiebreak but he will be the better for it moving forwards. The 23-year-old successfully defended his Monte-Carlo Open title last month for a second Masters title and he has excelled on clay so far. Tsitsipas has lost to an eventual finalist in three of his last four tournaments: the eventual champion at the Barcelona Open and Madrid Open (both Carlos Alcaraz) and Madrid runner-up Alexander Zverev.
THE PREDICTION
A first clay-court meeting between Karen Khachanov and Stefanos Tsitsipas will be an interesting one with the Russian playing well in Rome so far and Tsitsipas struggling against Grigor Dimitrov on Wednesday. Still, the Greek leads this head-to-head record comfortably at 4-0 after two wins last season at the Rotterdam Open and Canadian Open and three of those wins have come at Masters level. Three of the four have also come in straight sets, making that pick for Tsitsipas seem a reasonable call here. The cautious pick is for Tsitsipas to win outright.
