THE PREDICTION

World number 16 Diego Schwartzman will be eager to get to work on the clay swing as one of the best players on tour on this surface. The 29-year-old won three of his four ATP titles on clay and he has finished runner-up on the surface twice this year already, to Casper Ruud at the Buenos Aires Open and Carlos Alcaraz at the Rio Open. World number 24 Karen Khachanov is also more than comfortable on clay and he has also finished runner-up this season, to Gael Monfils at Adelaide 1 back in January. The Russian is riding a three-match losing streak since losing to Novak Djokovic at the Dubai Tennis Championships in February.

Schwartzman reached the final of a clay Masters event back in 2020, where he beat Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals before finishing runner-up to Novak Djokovic at the Italian Open. A run to the quarter-finals here back in 2017 was ended by Nadal, with the Argentine often requiring the very best to oust him on this surface. For that reason, back Schwartzman to take at least a set here as the likelier winner or take the risk on an outright pick.
