THE LOWDOWN
KAREN KHACHANOV
World number 30 Karen Khachanov took a little while to get going against Denis Kudla on Monday but after conceding the first set he rallied well to win through in four. The 25-year-old former world number eight reached the quarter-finals of Wimbledon last season in a stubborn return to form but he has yet to maintain a consistent level of his best tennis since his Paris Masters victory back in 2018.
BENJAMIN BONZI
World number 63 Benjamin Bonzi put in a commanding display to beat Peter Gojowczyk in straight sets on Monday in what is his Australian Open debut. The 25-year-old spent a very successful year on the Challenger circuit last season and he is clearly ready to make the step-up to the main tour.
THE PREDICTION
This match looks like nearing the three-hour mark between two players more than happy to battle it out on the baseline all day long. Their only previous meeting went the distance ion three sets at the Lyon Open last season where Khachanov came through the winner but this is exactly the kind of match-up that the Russian can sometimes take his eye off. The very cautious pick here is for Khachanov to win at least two sets and leaving the winner up to chance, although if you can find an option for at least four sets take that instead.
