THE PREDICTION

36-year-old Andy Murray should move back up to somewhere around 36th when the rankings refresh on Monday after a solid week in Toronto. The former world number one suffered a groin strain that saw him withdraw from the round of 16 after two wins and it remains to be seen if he has returned to court too quickly in this intriguing clash with Karen Khachanov. World number 11 Khachanov has not played since a strong run to the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros in June, where he took the first set from Novak Djokovic before defeat to the eventual champion, but when he has been fit enough to play this season he has looked remarkably composed. The Russian reached the semi-finals of both this season’s Australian Open and last summer’s US Open to look as strong as he ever has on hardcourts but a first match back since June should see him struggle here. If Murray had not been so recently injured the Brit would be a solid favourite to come through on this occasion but take him to earn at least a set and consider adding at least a tiebreak between two serves that are hard to break.
