THE PREDICTION

World number 37 Kaia Kanepi beat Daria Saville in comfortable straight sets on Saturday to reach her first tour final since early 2021, where she finished runner up to Elise Mertens at the Gippsland Trophy. You have to go as far back as 2013 for her nearest final after that, where she won her fourth WTA title at the Brussels Open, and this Citi Open final is thoroughly deserving of the veteran’s incredible swansong over the last two seasons. 23-year-old Liudmila Samsonova claimed her first WTA title at last season’s Berlin Open but since then the Russian has largely struggled to replicate those heights. A strong run at the Stuttgart Open back in April was a brief respite from disappointing results but she has bettered that in Washington with an impressive run to her second tour final, ousting some tough foes this week in the aforementioned Mertens, Ajla Tomljanovic and Emma Raducanu before a comprehensive victory over Xiyu Wang on Saturday.

Samsonova beat Kanepi at Wimbledon last season on grass that suited her best but this second meeting on a hardcourt should level things up. Kanepi’s experience could help as much as hinder with few chances left to win a fifth WTA title, and her first for almost a decade, whilst Samsonova is no youthful upstart with a so far 100% record at this stage of a tournament. Three sets seem likely and head over heart here suggests taking Samsonova to win at least a set as the victor of their only previous encounter.
