THE LOWDOWN

JORDAN THOMPSON

World number 78 Jordan Thompson came back from a set down to beat out-of-sorts David Goffin on Friday. The 27-year-old finished runner-up to Adrian Mannarino in the ‘s-Hertogenbosch Open final back in 2019, his only tour final to date.

GRIGOR DIMITROV

Former world number three Grigor Dimitrov found his best tennis, however briefly, here last October in a run to the semi-finals ended by eventual champion Cam Norrie. The 30-year-old beat the new US Open champion Daniil Medvedev and then Hubert Hurkacz in the desert last season but he has since struggled once again to express himself on court. Dimitrov won the most recent of his eight career titles at the 2017 ATP Finals, the same year he won his only Masters title at the Cincinnati Open.

THE PREDICTION

As a common rule, leave Grigor Dimitrov’s matches out of accumulators. The Bulgarian is one of the best players of his generation but since proving that with an ATP Finals title in 2017 it has been impossible to predict where next he finds his fleeting best level. The 30-year-old looked sure to win Indian Wells last season after a stunning victory over Daniil Medvedev but he just as quickly got outmanoeuvred by Cam Norrie and he has since struggled. A three-set defeat to Stefan Kozlov last time out at the Mexican Open is poor by his standards and it would not be a surprise to see Jordan Thompson wait him out for a victory in three sets. There is no sensible call here – so take the Aussie to win at least a set even in defeat or leave it alone altogether. Thompson was the winner of their only previous meeting at the Miami Masters in 2019.
