THE PREDICTION
17-year-old Joao Fonseca has almost halved his current ATP ranking of 636th with a stupendous run to the quarter-finals of the Rio Open on his ATP tour debut. The teenager won the Boy’s Singles at the US Open last summer to look ready for professional tennis in 2024 but this dream run could be the early making of him, despite the outcome here, if managed sensibly. A blistering win over seventh seed Arthur Fils on Wednesday set the tournament buzz ablaze in Rio and that energy saw him oust former number 17 Cristian Garin on Thursday night but this could quite possibly be his toughest test against a fellow youngster on the rise.
22-year-old Mariano Navone may be five years Fonseca’s senior but he is enjoying a similar trajectory at this level, with excellent upsets over Federico Coria and Yannick Hanfmann seeing him break inside the top 100 for the first time. The Argentine will have to play the villain of the piece in the biggest match of his career but that could as much help as hinder him, depending on his character. Fonseca’s surge looks a little fateful at this moment in time but three sets seem likelier than two in this likely late-night thriller. Back Fonseca to just edge it backed by a raucous partisan atmosphere.
TIP: JOAO FONSECA TO WIN
