THE LOWDOWN

World number 74 Jiri Lehecka takes a 10-17 record into the Next Gen ATP Finals, with last season perhaps his more impressive breakthrough on tour, but the hardcourt conditions will suit the Czech’s game. 20-year-old Lehecka’s best campaign came early at the Rotterdam Open, where he took Stefanos Tsitsipas to three sets before eventually falling to defeat.

21-year-old Francesco Passaro is one of a few bright Italian lights coming through on tour and he will start in Milan at a career-high ATP world ranking of 119th. Passaro recently clamed the first tour-level victory of his career in Florence, where he beat Zhizhen Zhang in the first round, but he has enjoyed plenty of success at Challenger level and below this season

THE PREDICTION

A first meeting between these two players anywhere else on the tour would, at this moment in time, lean heavily in Jiri Lehecka’s favour but home advantage does level things up for Francesco Passaro. There is always one outsider who suddenly exceeds expectations and it is likely to be one of Passaro or late instalment Matteo Arnaldi that sneaks into the semi-finals at the cost of a more seasoned tour professional. Lehecka has failed to qualify for his last two tournaments but his last victory on tour did come against former world number three Grigor Dimitrov. Back the Czech to win at least a set for caution at this early stage.
