THE LOWDOWN
JIL TEICHMANN
World number 35 Jil Teichmann has taken out two tough foes so far in Petra Kvitova and 17th-seed Leylah Fernandez without dropping a set at the Madrid Open. The 24-year-old is at her best on clay but she also has excellent Masters pedigree after a stunning run to the final of the Cincinnati Open last season was ended by Ash Barty.
ELENA RYBAKINA
World number 18 Elena Rybakina did not conceded a game to Katerina Siniakova on Sunday as she saw her opponent retire early from the second set. The 22-year-old took Paula Badosa to three sets in a tight defeat at the Stuttgart Open last week and with so few seeds remaining in the draw she should be considered an outside favourite for a first Masters title this week. Rybakina famously defeated Serena Williams to reach the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros last season.
THE PREDICTION
This is a huge opportunity for one of Jil Teichmann and Elena Rybakina to reach a Masters quarter-final and with two differing playstyles meeting for the first time this could end up the match of the day on Tuesday. 22-year-old Rybakina has to be considered the favourite to find a way through due to high-altitude conditions in Madrid favouring big-servers and harder hitters but Teichmann can be superb on this surface when she finds rhythm and it would not be a surprise to see this go to a decider. The sensible option for a first meeting is always taking the favourite to earn at least a set, so back Rybakina to do so here.
