THE LOWDOWN
JESSICA PEGULA
World number four Jessica Pegula conceded just four games to a fatigued Lesia Tsurenko on Sunday to reach the quarter-finals at Wimbledon for the first time – completing her set of last eights reached at Grand Slams. The 29-year-old has reached the quarter-finals in six of her last 11 Grand Slam appearances to prove her remarkable consistency at this level since blooming late in her career but she has yet to make it past this stage anywhere, with four of those defeats coming against Iga Swiatek or Ash Barty.
MARKETA VONDROUSOVA
24-year-old Marketa Vondrousova was on the comeback trail at the start of this season after suffering a long injury absence last year and the Czech has fast-tracked her return to the top 30 already. Vondrousova set a career-high WTA world ranking of 14th after finishing runner-up to Ash Barty at Roland-Garros in 2019 but she has been a threat across surfaces, with this her second quarter-final at Wimbledon. The Czech came back from a set down to oust compatriot Marie Bouzkova on Sunday, backing-up excellent upsets over seeds Veronika Kudermetova and Donna Vekic.
THE PREDICTION
This could be a proper thriller on Tuesday in a first meeting on tour between the ruthless hitting of Jessica Pegula and Marketa Vondrousova’s mercurial talents. Pegula would much prefer this match took place on her favoured hardcourts as a player who enjoys a regular, more predictable ball but she has impressed at Wimbledon so far, conceding just 13 games since a first round battle with Lauren Davis. Vondrousova has come through by far the tougher draw to look a serious threat here and if the Czech finds her very best level she should win. Back the more dependable Pegula to earn at least a set to leave this tight one up to chance.
