THE LOWDOWN
World number five Jessica Pegula upset world number one Aryna Sabalenka on Tuesday to coast through to the semi-finals in Cancun. The 29-year-old looked like one of the stringer candidates coming into this week’s action as one of the more level-headed, adaptable players on tour and two huge results over big-serving Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina suggests she is feeling confident in these conditions. Victory at the Guadalajara Masters last season should aid in that respect and the American added a second Masters title to her name in Montreal back in August, beating potential semi-final foes Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff en-route.
World number nine Maria Sakkari’s WTA Finals chances hare over despite taking a well-earned set from Elena Rybakina in defeat on Tuesday. The 28-year-old won this season’s Guadalajara Masters, after finishing runner-up to Pegula there late last season, to earn her plenty of favour with the home crowds in Cancun but her 6-0 6-1 defeat to Aryna Sabalenka on Sunday was a horror start that looked too steep a fall to come back from even before her second clash.
THE PREDICTION
Maria Sakkari saved her season, and exorcised several years’ worth of demons, by winning the Guadalajara Masters in September but conditions in Cancun have not helped her cause. The Greek went on a seven-match winning streak before defeat to Jessica Pegula in the semi-finals of the Japan Open but she leads their head-to-head 5-4 as things stand. Pegula has won two of their three encounters this season, though, and at least a set in each to offer a suitable alternative to picking the winner inside an accumulator. Otherwise back Pegula to win this outright as a player less likely to take her eye off the ball in a dead rubber.
BETTING TIP: Jessica Pegula to win.
