JESSICA PEGULA VS KAROLINA MUCHOVA PREDICTION
Jessica Pegula is arguably the form player on the WTA Tour in the past few weeks and her win over world number one Iga Swiatek on Wednesday only supports that further. She won the Canadian Open in impressive fashion and then reached the final in Cincinnati before losing to Aryna Sabalenka. She is now one step away from another final and she has Karolina Muchova standing in her way.
Both of these players have yet to drop a set in the entirety of this year’s US Open so something has to give here. Pegula will be buoyed from the fact that Swiatek had not dropped a set until she met her in the quarters and she came through that unscathed.
The pair met in Cincinnati a couple of weeks ago and that could give us some clues as to how this may play out. Muchova won the first set 7-5 only to see Pegula fightback and win the next two 6-4 6-2. A three-set battle would be quite fitting here and would be no surprise.
Muchova was a class above Beatriz Haddad Maia in the quarter-finals winning 6-1 6-4. Despite some physical issues, she battled through those and was comfortable for most of that match. Her aggression was key and Haddad Maia had no answer to it.
Pegula will not be phased by that approach and she will match it fire for fire. The defensive side of her game is impressive and she is generating so many break points that she is enjoying a lot of success that way. Muchova’s serve has been excellent this fortnight and that particular part of this game could be key in deciding it.
Our preference simply has to go to Pegula given her form. Very few players have been able to find a solution for her relentless approach and with Muchova not 100% fit on Wednesday, if she is not fully fit 24 hours later, it is hard to see her push Pegula enough. It would be no surprise if she manages to push this to a third set, but Pegula is the pick here.
