THE PREDICTION

American number one Jessica Pegula is coming off a disappointing loss to Daria Saville at the Citi Open last week, a title she was defending from way back in 2019, but she did win the Women’s Doubles title in Washington alongside Erin Routliffe. The 28-year-old is enjoying her best season on tour with runs to the quarter-finals at both the Australian Open, for a successive season, and Roland-Garros complementing a first Masters final reached at the Madrid Open before defeat to Ons Jabeur. Pegula has it in her to win a tournament like Toronto or Cincinnati next week but this could be a tricky opener against world number 187 Asia Muhammad, who is coming off one of the wins of her career. The 31-year-old stunned Madison Keys in straight sets on Monday after qualifying well this weekend and with Pegula coming in a little undercooked on her favoured hard surface it would not be a huge surprise to see this need a decider. Pegula won their first meeting in comfortable straight sets back in 2019 but taking the world number seven to come through outright seems a sensible concession here.
