JESSICA PEGULA VS ARYNA SABALENKA PREDICTION
Aryan Sabalenka’s sparkling form continued on Thursday night as she beat a valiant Emma Navarro in straight sets to make it through to the final. Once again, Sabalenka had to handle some adversity when Navarro put her under some pressure in the second set, but she came through it well.
She now meets Jessica in the final which is a repeat of the Cincinnati Open final just a few weeks ago. It was Sabalenka who won that 6-3 7-5 but it was a close-fought match and Pegula was pretty tired at that point. She had won the Canadian Open just the week before and has been in sensational form since the tour returned to North America. A well-rested Sabalenka was just the fresher of the two in that match but it is no surprise to see the pair return to the final in New York to battle it out once again.
She had to fight harder than any other match she has played this fortnight but Jessica Pegula battled back from a set down to beat Karolina Muchova to earn a place in Saturday’s final. In the first set, she looked pretty flat but the crowd got behind her and she dug deep to gain some momentum to come back.
Pegula struggled with Muchova’s aggression in the first set and on occasions, which does not bode well for facing Sabalenka. The Belarussian bullied her in that Cincinnati final smashing 10 aces and winning 91% on her impressive first serve. She won 26 receiving points compared to Pegula’s seven and the American simply has to find a way to close that gap here.
The concern for me in the semi-finals was that Pegula was looking a little flat at times and that will simply lead to Sabalenka blowing her away. It is the Belarussian that is looking stronger and seems to be peaking at the right time and we favour her to lift the title and potentially in straight sets.
