THE LOWDOWN
World number three Jessica Pegula’s season looked like it would be a story of near misses as she desperately sought a second WTA title since her first back in 2019 but she finally won the first Masters title of her career in Guadalajara two weeks ago. The US number one has struggled to find that intensity at the WTA Finals, though, losing both of her Doubles matches alongside Coco Gauff and both of her singles so far after a three-set defeat to Ons Jabeur on Wednesday.
World number seven Aryna Sabalenka got her WTA Finals campaign underway solidly with a three-set victory over Ons Jabeur but he fell comfortably to in-form Maria Sakkari on Wednesday. The 24-year-old former world number two has endured a mad season of largely horrid form, so even being here at Fort Worth is testament to her abilities when she does find her best tennis.
THE PREDICTION
Aryna Sabalenka will be vying with Ons Jabeur for the second semi-final spot after Maria Sakkari sailed through but Jessica Pegula can still sneak through if she wins in straight sets here and Sakkari beats Jabeur. Much of this result depends on what version of the erratic Sabalenka takes to the court but Pegula will be desperate to leave everything out on the court on Friday in her last chance to get a win on the board on her WTA Finals debut. Pegula beat Sabalenka at the US Open in 2020 to take their first meeting but the Belarussian has taken each of their last three meetings in straight sets on clay, including this year in Rome. Given Sabalenka has won at least a set in all four of their matches so far, take the Belarussian to earn at least one here in a match that is likely to see three sets.
