This match looks best left well alone as both Frenchmen come into Madrid with just one win all season. 36-year-old Jeremy Chardy enters on a protected ranking as he currently sits outside the top 600 following a year-long injury absence whilst 22-year-old Hugo Gaston comes in at world number 106 with poor form stretching back to last summer’s run to the third round of the French Open. Gaston has yet to really impress on tour outside of Paris, let alone France, but he should enjoy a small cult following in this first encounter with tour veteran Chardy, who has not played a singles match since the second round of the Australian Open. The high-altitude conditions would favour the elder Frenchman’s fierce groundstrokes if he were fully fit but it is hard to side with either player here.
