THE PREDICTION
It is a case of déjà vu for world number 15 Daria Kasatkina as she finds herself in the Adelaide final for a second season running. The 26-year-old blasted her way through the competition last year before a surprising capitulation in the final against Belinda Bencic in a campaign that ended up summarising her intermittent 2023 season. The Russian has ridden her luck to be here after enjoying back-to-back walkovers, with Laura Siegemund and then Jessica Pegula dropping out, but that should leave her well rested and ready to attempt to dismantle Jelena Ostapenko’s brutal game. World number 12 Ostapenko is likely to feel a sense of injustice in facing a player who has bypassed the quarter and semi-finals here but she brings improving form into this clash with Kasatkina after back-to-back straight-set victories over Marta Kostyuk and Ekaterina Alexandrova.
The Latvian leads their head-to-head 4-2 at tour level but she has won each of their last three encounters in three sets, including last year at the Rome Masters. Notably, Kasatkina has won at least a set in all six of their matches so backing the Russian to win at least one could be the shrewd move in avoiding a tough pick. However, Ostapenko looks strong enough to edge it in three.
TIP: JELENA OSTAPENKO TO WIN
