THE PREDICTION
Korea Open top seed Jelena Ostapenko eventually overcame Boyoung Jeong in an error-strewn, choppy three-set opener on Wednesday. The world number 19 was in searing form for much of the first-half of the season, winning her fifth WTA title against a top-level field at the Dubai Tennis Championships back in February, but she has failed to win back-to-back matches on tour since Wimbledon when she was stunned in the round of 16 by Tatjana Maria. The Latvian should have more than enough to oust world number 141 Anastasia Gasanova but the Russian will know to take the game to her opponent as she continues to struggle finding her rhythm. 23-year-old Gasanova beat Astra Sharma in straight sets in the first round and she stunned Alison Riske-Amritraj at last week’s Chennai Open but Ostapenko should be better than her opener and ultimately too powerful. Three sets seem about as likely as two, though, so take Ostapenko to win outright.
