THE PREDICTION

World number 16 Jelena Ostapenko looked assured in her first match back since a disappointing round of 16 exit at Wimbledon last month, beating Anhelina Kalinina in straight sets. The 25-year-old’s greatest achievement to date remains winning the 2017 Roland-Garros title at just 20 years old but after a few years in the wilderness she has worked hard to deliver a more consistent game that should see her break back into the top 10 sooner rather than later. World number 35 Alison Riske put in a huge shift on Tuesday to beat Petra Kvitova in three sets. The 32-year-old recently reached the 13th WTA final of her career before losing to Beatriz Haddad-Maia in three sets at the Nottingham Open in June and she looks ready to get back to that level here in Toronto. Ostapenko beat Riske in three sets at the Australian Open back in January to lead their head-to-head record 2-0 but the Latvian is one of the looser cannons out there and Riske will know to stay grounded and wait for opportunities. Take Ostapenko to win outright, or at least a set inside an accumulator.
